Abundances in different galactic populations

چکیده

Aims. We used the UVES spectrograph (VLT-UT2 telescope) to obtain high-resolution spectra of 6 stars hosting transiting planets, namely for OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1. The spectra are now used to derive and discuss the chemical abundances for C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn. Methods. Abundances were derived in LTE, using 1-D plane-parallel Kurucz model atmospheres. For S, Zn and Cu we used a spectral synthesis procedure, while for the remaining cases the abundances were derived from measurements of line-equivalent widths. Results. The resulting abundances are compared with those found for stars in the solar neighborhood. Distances and galactic coordinates are estimated for the stars. We conclude that besides being particularly metal-rich, with small possible exceptions OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1 are chemically undistinguishable from the field (thin disk) stars regarding their [X/Fe] abundances. This is particularly relevant for the most distant of the targets, located at up to ∼2 Kpc from the Sun. We also did not find any correlation between the abundances and the condensation temperature of the elements, an evidence that strong accretion of planetary-like material, tentatively connected to planetary migration, did not occur.

The Galactic Bulge: the Stellar and Planetary Nebulae Populations

We compare abundances patterns in the Bulge for elements observed in stars and in planetary nebulae. Some α elements, like Mg and Ti, are overabundant in respect to Fe, and others are not, like He, O, Si, S, Ar, Ca. The first ones favor a quick evolution of the Galactic Bulge, and the seconds a much slower one.

The Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of galactic globular clusters – II. The seven stellar populations of NGC 7089 (M2)

We present high-precision multiband photometry for the globular cluster (GC) M2. We combine the analysis of the photometric data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic GCs GO-13297, with chemical abundances by Yong et al., and compare the photometry with models in order to analyse the multiple stellar sequences we identified in the colour–magnitude diagram. We find...

A New View of the Dwarf Spheroidal Satellites of the Milky Way from Vlt/flames1: Where Are the Very Metal Poor Stars?

As part of the Dwarf galaxies Abundances and Radial-velocities Team (DART) Programme, we have measured the metallicities of a large sample of stars in four nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph): Sculptor, Sextans, Fornax and Carina. The low mean metal abundances and the presence of very old stellar populations in these galaxies have supported the view that they are fossils from the early Univ...

The planetary nebulae populations in five galaxies: abundance patterns and evolution

We have collected photometric and spectroscopic data on planetary nebulae (PNe) in 5 galaxies: the Milky Way (bulge), M 31 (bulge), M 32, the LMC and the SMC. We have computed the abundances of O, Ne and N and compared them from one galaxy to another. In each Galaxy, the distribution of oxygen abundances has a large dispersion. The average O/H ratio is larger in the M 31 and the Galactic bulge ...

The relative abundances of ellipticals and starbursts among the Extremely Red Galaxies

We present J band observations of a complete sample of 57 red galaxies selected to have K<20 and R−K>5.3. We use the Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000) prescriptions, based on the R−K and J−K colours, to separate the two dominant populations, old ellipticals and dusty starbursts. We find that both populations are present in the current sample and have similar abundances, and discuss the uncertainties...
